Integrating AI into the Core of Engineering: Systems, Skills, and Competitiveness

What the data show

AI is no longer a “side project” for innovation; it is emerging as a structural driver of transformation.

By 2030, the labor market will undergo a profound transformation: a significant portion of current jobs will be affected, with a net positive balance between job creation and job losses.

The issue is not just about jobs, but about skills: a significant proportion of “core” skills will need to evolve, and a majority of employees will need training by 2030: 39% of “core” skills are expected to be transformed or become obsolete by 2030; globally, 59 out of every 100 people will need training.

What This Means for Engineering

It does not replace the engineer; rather, it shifts the focus of the profession. Less repetitive work, more high-value system design, integration, validation, and problem-solving.

Technology-related roles (AI/ML, big data, software development) are growing rapidly, while more routine tasks are on the decline.

Moving from Adoption to Integration of AI

Many organizations start with tools (co-pilots, test automation, decision-making aids). The long-term benefit becomes apparent when AI is treated as an integral part of the backbone of engineering: workflows, architecture, governance, and continuous improvement.
At the same time, skills gaps remain the primary obstacle; hence plans that combine large-scale upskilling, targeted hiring, and the redeployment of staff from declining roles to growing ones.

What Will Set Leaders Apart by 2027

Embed AI at the heart of engineering processes and role design. Scale up skills development and internal mobility across the organization.
Strengthen governance: quality, traceability, accountability. Institutionalize continuous learning as a fundamental operational pillar.

Key Message

AI is becoming infrastructure. The question is no longer “Should we experiment with AI?” but“Have we reimagined our engineering systems and talent models to operate with AI at the core?”
